Can anyone help the following couple looking for work in the Silver Coast area? If so please let us know.

Good morning

I noticed your interesting website when looking for accommodation for a trip to Portugal.

My husband & I are planning to move to the Silver Coast and visited the area in December and hope to return to view more properties soon.

My query is that my husband wants to continue to work when we relocate and I wondered if you could advise us? He was a marine engineer in the Royal Navy and a Fire Safety Officer working at the Colliseum in London. He is currently employed in the NHS as a Security Specialist, Fire, Health & Safety Manager. He is about to start a pool maintenance course to enhance his skills.

Please could you let me know if there may be any opportunities for employment following our move.

Incidently, I recently retired from the NHS as a Facilities Manager so could offer my skills and experience too !!

I do hope you don’t mind me contacting you but your website sounded so informative & helpful.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Chris

Dear Chris,

Unfortunately at the moment the employment situation in Portugal is not the best with many Portuguese people also looking for work.

It is perfectly feasible to apply for work here as the right exists under European Community legislation.

There may be a demand for your particular skills and I would focus on those. There is an over-supply of pool maintenance technicians as we know as we are in the business and wage rates and sub-contracting rates are very low.

It will, of course, be fundamental to be able to converse in Portuguese if you want to break into the employment pool. Natural Portuguese speakers obviously have a major advantage in the work-place.

I am sorry that I cannot paint a rosier picture for you in terms of employment but times are hard here.

May we post your e-mail and our reply on our blog? You never know what this might turn up.

Please do let us know if we can assist you in your search for accommodation in Portugal during your trip.

Best wishes for the future.

Kind regards.
