Strong, sometimes gale-force, winds mean that some plants just will not thrive and the growth of others will be retarded. However, the planting of a suitable hedge can give you the shelter which your plants crave. Hedges are good at deadening the impact of wind whereas walls and other solid barriers create turbulence and can actually make things worse.

Suitable hedging plants for exposed positions on the Silver Coast are Malealuca, Myosporum, Pyracantha and Escalonia. Malealuca and Myosporum are quite quick growers whereas Pyracantha and Escalonia will take their time to get to the size you want.

Plants and trees which will withstand the salty, wind air are acacia, cytisus (broom), cordyline, hydrangea, fuchsia magellanica, hebe, red-hot poker, thyme.

Useful annuals that you can count on are alyssum, calendula, gazania, Virginian stock.

Creating a beautiful garden by the sea on Portugal’s Silver Coast is more challenging than twenty kilometres inland but can still be achieved by creating the necessary shelter and choosing the right plants and trees.
